South State Bank
Custom Mural Design
South State Bank recently renovated a branch in the San Marco neighborhood, just south of downtown Jacksonville.
The existing building — a two-story structure with an open second-floor overlook — was originally designed in the 1980s and due for an update. As part of the renovation, Interior Designer Sumner Lane of Lane Architecture identified two large vertical walls at the main entrances as an opportunity to create something with a grand impact. Each wall extends nearly 30 feet high, becoming a natural focal point upon entry.

The concept for the murals was rooted in place — a visual reflection of San Marco’s character and history. The neighborhood is known for its canopy of live oaks, walkable town square, and distinct architectural details that give it a strong sense of identity.
Each mural captures a different perspective of the neighborhood. One focuses on the historic, Art Deco-style theater, with its recognizable signage framed by live oak branches. The other offers an aerial view of San Marco and the St. Johns River, with the downtown skyline beyond.
To keep the two installations connected, we used a shared palette and approach includin layered blue and green watercolor washes paired with hand-drawn textures to bring in depth and movement. Because the primary viewing angle begins at ground level, key focal points were intentionally placed lower, allowing the composition to expand upward and fully engage the height of the space.
In addition to the murals, we designed custom resin mobiles inspired by the forms of Spanish moss that hangs throughout the neighborhood’s oak trees. Suspended with integrated lighting, these elements add dimension and reinforce the connection to place, creating a warm, immersive experience for visitors.
